From position to role The evolution of big men in euroleague basketball
Main Article Content
Abstract
Contemporary elite professional basketball has shifted from rigid positional boundaries toward fluid, hybridized frontcourt roles. This study examined the 15-year longitudinal evolution of EuroLeague power forwards (4) and centers (5) (2010–11 to 2024–25), evaluating the rate and structural pattern of positional convergence. Using a retrospective cohort of 999 player-season observations across 11 advanced performance metrics, seasons were grouped into Traditional, Transitional, and Modern eras. Analyses included Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Linear Mixed Models (LMM) with unstructured covariance to account for repeated measures, and Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering validated by Artificial Neural Network (ANN) stability procedures. LMM revealed significant main effects of position and era across all latent performance factors (p < .001). However, non-significant Position × Era interactions (p > .05) and trivial effect sizes (f² < .01) indicated that power forwards and centers evolved through parallel rather than asymmetric trajectories. Nakagawa’s R² values demonstrated strong model fit (Marginal R² = .17 – .25; Conditional R² = .51 – .58). FCM further showed a progressive erosion of positional separation, with modern power forwards (36.0%) and centers (36.8%) converging within identical interior-efficiency archetypes. These findings provide strong empirical support for the positionless basketball hypothesis in elite European basketball.
