Abstract

The game model is central to football coaching, yet its conceptual boundaries and its role in linking strategic intentions with practice remain insufficiently defined. Contemporary approaches explain representative learning, constraint manipulation and player adaptation, but provide limited guidance on how game-model principles should inform the design and evaluation of training tasks. This paper proposes the Model-to-Task Translation Process (MTTP), an integrative conceptual and decision-guiding framework that links coaching philosophy, game idea, game-model principles, training priorities, task constraints, learning environments and behavioural emergence. It draws selectively on Tactical Periodization, Ecological Dynamics, the Constraints-Led Approach, Nonlinear Pedagogy and Coaching Pedagogy while acknowledging their distinct analytical levels and theoretical assumptions. The MTTP positions the game model as the primary reference for deciding what should be developed, while ecological and pedagogical perspectives inform how practice opportunities are designed and regulated. Its distinctive contribution lies in specifying a recursive and empirically examinable translation pathway, distinguishing model–task alignment from training representativeness, and providing preliminary operational criteria, an applied football case and six testable propositions. The MTTP is presented as a conceptual proposition requiring empirical validation, not as a prescriptive or validated training method.
